“Life As a Cellist”
Gavriel Lipkind
3/7 19:00 The Odeum NTU Center for the Arts
TEL:3366-4782
Description:
Gavriel Lipkind, born in Tel Aviv in 1977, enjoyed an early stellar rise to international renown as a young cellist, before making the decision to question a predefined life and halt a predictable path. He decided to take a three-year period of retreat from stage life, during which he devoted himself to further studies and recording. An iconoclastic thinker, Mr. Lipkind’s work today stands for consistent thought and intrinsic musical inspiration without compromising quality - an almost unattainable goal in the life of performing soloists today. Being a genuine fanatic of musical detail and audio documentation, Mr. Lipkind has chosen a radical path of innovation in his profession. Before his performance, Lipkind will deliver a talk in National Taiwan University about his unique career as a musician, his interpretation of composers and their works, and the program performed in Taipei.

By Gretchen Kai Halpert
14:30 International Conference Hall, Library
Description:
Why do Scientists draw? Can a painting be realistic but imaginative at the same time? The exhibition “ A Deliberate Hand The Art of a Scientific Illustrator” is a solo exhibition of the artist Gretchen Kai Halpert, who made her debut show in NTU. Works in the show include botanical, medical, and biological drawings and sketches, which showcase an artist’s mind aided by her scientific observation, and how art and science are to her the two sides of the coin.
In conjunction with the exhibition, NTU library has chosen from her collection more than sixty precious works on scientific illustration to be displayed digitally, and more than ten original pieces to be displayed on the scene. Their subjects cover eastern and western animals, plants and medical science, dating back from 18th century to 20th century. The pictures are amazingly detailed. Back in that time when photography was not well developed, the people, curious about their world, captured with their own eyes and hands the true looks of Mother Nature’s creations

Description:
This play was written by playwright Christopher Hampton. It is the story about the psychiatrist Carl Jung treating a female patient, Sabina, who was suffering from psychological illness. It is a play based on a true story which involved psychotherapy. It reveals the birth of the theory of psychoanalysis, essential points about the subconscious, and other psychoanalytical theory by using dialogues from various perspectives (doctor, patient, different nationalities). The play also included the modern views of the director and playwright to point out issues such as race, medicine, and humanity. The executive production team and technical staff were mainly students and faculty of the Department of Drama and Theater, National Taiwan University, together with rising theater troupes. The layout of the play shows the relationships between doctors and patients, the beginning of psychotherapy, and conflicts of perspectives among different schools of psychology. It also attempts to draw the attention and thinking of people towards psychoanalysis, as well as the dialectics of medicine and humanity.
