The Center for General Education (CGE) was established in April 1996 in accordance with the organizational regulations of our university. Its purpose is to promote and administer general and liberal education and other related matters.
Ever since its inception, the Commission has striven to enrich the content of general and liberal education, express the unique characteristics of National Taiwan University, and fulfill the ideal of a well-rounded education. Based on previous experience and taking into account the specific circumstances of our university, our committee has designed a new curriculum in general and liberal education that was first implemented in the 1996-97 academic year. Since then, the curriculum has remained largely unchanged except for a few minor changes in course requirements and credit hours.
- The general education curriculum consists of 18 hours of mandatory courses: "Chinese Literature" (6 hours), "Foreign languages" (6 hours), "History" (4 hours), "Constitution" or "Civic Education" (2 hours). The liberal education curriculum requires full-time students to take 12 credit hours and part-time students in the education extension program to take 8 credit hours.
- The curriculum covers four major areas: humanities, social sciences, material sciences and life
science. To obtain a broader, more balanced understanding, students are encouraged to develop interest
in disciplines other than their own, and are therefore asked to take liberal education courses other
than those required by their majors.
