Founded in 1928, the Taihoku (Taipei) Imperial University was officially renamed National Taiwan University in 1945. For the past half-century, National Taiwan University has been not only the oldest university in Taiwan but also the higher educational institution that contains the most comprehensive fields in academic studies. With around 30,000 students, the University has in total 11 colleges: College of Liberal Arts, College of Science, College of Social Sciences, College of Medicine, College of Engineering, College of Agriculture, College of Management, College of Public Health, College of Electrical Engineering and Computer science, College of Law, and College of Life Science.
Center for International Academic Exchange, originally named International Programs and Liaison Office, was established on August 1, 1985. The Center handles affairs concerning international academic collaboration and reception of foreign visitors. The former includes signing of protocols, organizing international academic symposia, faculty and student exchanges, and summer programs. The Center has been officially commissioned by the Ministry of Education as the National Secretariat for Canada-Taiwan Higher Education Conference and University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific (UMAP) .
During the years of 1985- 1992, the Center was in charge of the publication of the NTU Newsletter, which aimed to enhance intramural coordination. The Center also served as a link between NTU and the media. After 1992, as NTU developed more and more academic ties with prestigious universities of the world, the Center took on an increasingly active role in exploring academic collaboration. From 1996 on, international exchange programs have become the Center's primary duty. With the recent development on international higher education, starting from 2005, the center is also in charge of the recruitment of international degree seeking students.
