NTU's Institute for Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences Sent Delegation to Visit Harvard University and Princeton's Institute for Advanced Studies

At the beginning of April, a delegation from NTU's Institute for Advanced Studies In Humanities and Social Sciences paid a visit to Harvard University and PrincetonUniversity's Institute for Advanced Studies. The delegation, led by Dean of the Institute, Dr. Tzong-Ho Bao , and whose members included Vice Deans Dr. Der-lan Yeh and Dr. Chien-fu Lin, arrived in Boston on April 2nd. Soon after their arrival they went to Harvard University's Racliffe Institute for Advanced Studies for a courtesy call.

Director of the Radcliffe Institute, Dr. Louise Richardson explained to NTU's delegation that the purpose of the Radcliffe Institute was to establish an academic environment to allow Harvard students to pursue advanced studies in any professional discipline and creative art. Radcliffe was originally a women's college of Harvard's, therefore, Radcliffe Institute placed special emphasis on gender and social issues. At present the Radcliffe Institute accepts about 50 visiting scholars from all over the world, whose areas of specialization cross the boundaries of natural sciences and humanities. Through its platform and academic activities the Radcliffe Institute interacts with faculty and students of Harvard. In addition to the Radcliffe Institute, NTU's delegation also visited the Asia Center, Fairbank Center for East Asian Research and the Yenching Institute to discuss the developing trends in Asia and future cooperation with NTU in the area of East Asian research.

The main purpose of the trip was to visit Princeton University's Institute for Advanced Studies. Of around 100 institutes of similar nature in the world, Princeton University's IAS occupies the No. 1 position. When the delegation was in Princeton, Director of the IAS Dr. Peter Goddard received their visit in person, and specially assigned a scholar in residence, Professor Michael Walzer of International Relations to have a chat with them. Dr. Goddard also accepted Vice President Dr. Tsong-Ho Bao's invitation to visit NTU.
