UK-TAIWAN ICT Workshop to be Held to Promote
Taiwan-EU Bilateral Relations

The use of Smart Grid can improve an electricity network's efficiency and reliability, while reducing the networks' carbon oxide emission at the same time. According to a report by U.S. Energy and the Electric Power Research Organization, by the year 2025, Smart Grid can save the United States 5% to 10% in its power consumption, (roughly 50 billion ), and can reduce the carbon oxide emission by 25%. Green Communications utilizes the latest wireless technology to reduce carbon emission. Its green initiatives cover telecommunication infrastructures, equipments, components, and recycling of wastes. The direction for development of green communications does not affect its service quality or users' experience. Under the premise of not affecting the future strengthening of the functions and features of mobile internets, communication companies can enhance the green credentials of mobile internets through improving the power efficiency or through the use of renewable energies.

The United Kingdom occupies a leading position in the world in developing low carbon economies and possesses many core technologies in low carbon communication industries. Taiwan also has many world-class technological companies. If the two sides could cooperate and integrate the most advanced R&D technologies, they should be able to make more contributions to low carbon economy, capitalize on the 3 trillion pound global low carbon industry initiatives, and create a positive, bright future for mankind.

- Actively Promoting Interchange between Taiwan and Europe

The NTU Communication Research Center bases its development on cross disciplinary research, cross industrial development, and international cooperation. It pools together teaching talents from electrical engineering, information engineering, electronics engineering, telecommunications, and computer science, integrates their different fortes, and acquires an operating space for itself. The Center can be said to be the best intermediary among industry, academia, and governmental agencies.

The Center implements all kinds of national and international projects on a long term basis. From 2007 to 2008, it was commissioned to take up the affairs of IEEE Taipei Chapter, during which time it actively promoted the international participation from Taiwanese professionals, and integrated all kinds of international resources to implement international co-operations. Thus, it received the 2008 MGA Outstanding Large Section Award from IEEE.

From 2009 onward, the Center undertook the affairs of ICT Taiwan, helping professors from Taiwan and European Union to jointly implement the EU FP7 Plan. In the meantime, the Center embarked on cooperation opportunities with United Kingdom and Norway, and is slated to open up bilateral seminars for the first between Taiwan/UK and Taiwan/Norway in March and June of 2010. The purpose of so doing, is to promote bilateral relationship between Taiwan and the European Union, and to bring interchange to the grassroots of the European countries.
