NTU Center for Weather Climate and Disaster Research (WCDR) helps integrate Taiwan’s early warning system for floods into Belize’s disaster management protocols, which effectively minimizes the impact caused by extreme weather.

Because of Belize’s low-lying terrain, it has been facing climate risks for decades, such as rising temperatures, hurricanes, and floods. NTU and the International Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF) launched the Belize Urban Resilience and Disaster Prevention (BURDP) Project in 2020 to help Belize improve its capacity for climate problems. This project is executed by WCDR at NTU with four major objectives: 1. Strengthen overall flood preparedness and prevention and update basic maps. 2. Apply advanced monitoring techniques. 3. Flood control in flood-prone areas. 4. Raise awareness and knowledge of disaster prevention.

To fully promote the technology and the flood warning system in Belize, Yih-Chi Tan, Research Fellow of WCDR, and Hao-Che Howard Ho, Assistant Professor of the Department of Civil Engineering, hosted training sessions to enhance the expertise in disaster prevention and management for personnel in Belize. In the future, the University will continue to cooperate with ICDF and extend the existing cooperation experience and Taiwan’s latest disaster prevention technology to the whole country of Belize and other countries in the world.
