NTU and Taipei Tech Jointly Offer Woodworking Course

Established in 2015, Stanley Wang D-School @ NTU (D-School) is aimed to serve as the most influential stronghold of design practice in Taiwan. This year, D-School collaborated with the Wood School (W.School) of the National Taipei University of Technology (Taipei Tech) in offering a woodworking course for students to put their creative ideas and designs into practice.

W.School Director Tien-Li Chen (陳殿禮) invited the renowned maker of wood planes Yi-Nong Chan (詹益農) to join the instructor team in planning the course as well as guiding and assisting students throughout the one-week course until they completed their works for the final showcase. Providing a comprehensive array of equipment and a safe environment, W.School created a 48-hour experiential course that was both impressive and inspiring.

The course was positively received among students. One student kept an exhaustive record of the course. Another student commented, “In the course, I learned a lot from how the teachers integrate the philosophy of woodwork into life. It was really impressive.”

Jia-Yush Yen (顏家鈺), who is NTU’s Dean of Engineering and Deputy CEO of D-School, attended the final showcase and expressed his delight in seeing how students have learned not only the aesthetics and art of woodwork but also the practical skills required for executing creative and innovative thoughts.

Also attending the showcase, President of Taipei Tech Wen-Lung Li (黎文龍) overviewed the use and importance of wood in the history and development of human culture, and called for the integration between craft and scholarship to pass down the art of woodwork through systematic teaching. “Design is the product of interdisciplinary collaboration,” so concluded President Li at the showcase in expectation of further exchange between NTU and Taipei Tech.
