The year 2017 marks the 89th birthday of National Taiwan University (NTU). To celebrate this occasion, NTU held an anniversary celebration ceremony at the NTU Sports Center on November 15, 2017. NTU Interim President Tei-Wei Kuo (郭大維) opened and presided over the ceremony, in which Distinguished Alumni Awards, Social Devotion Special Awards, Outstanding Youth Awards, and Academic Achievement Awards were presented. The ceremony was joined by NTU’s former presidents as well as alumni and guests from around the world, who later engaged in joyful conversation with one another at the post-ceremony party.
In his opening address, Interim President Kuo congratulated the award recipients and praised them as the embodiment of NTU’s motto “Integrity, Diligence, Fidelity, and Compassion.” He appreciated all the recipients for demonstrating NTU’s core value of “Benefit from Society, Give Back to Society.” Meanwhile, he encouraged all NTU members to live this spirit of service, be grateful for what we have, and ask ourselves what we can do to contribute to society and lead Taiwan towards a brighter future.
At the ceremony, NTU recognized eight winners of the Distinguished Alumni Awards: Cho-Yun Hsu (許倬雲), Ching-Mao Cheng (鄭清茂), Lee-Lueng Fu (傅立倫), Mark Liu (劉德音), Richard M. Tsai (蔡明興), Jin-Chuan Hsu (許金川), Chih-Cheng Chen (陳志成), and Hai-Lung Dai (戴海龍). The distinguished alumni were commended for their contribution to social, academic, and technological advancement. They will be invited to each deliver a speech sharing their specialties, quest for excellence, and roads to success for the NTU Lectures on the Intellectual and Spiritual Pilgrimage (我的學思歷程).
As for the honors awarded to students, the Social Devotion Special Award was given to Calls over Ridges (遠山呼喚), a nonprofit organization initiated by economics student Tzu-Chun Lin (林子鈞) to promote education among impoverished children in Nepal and worldwide. The other two recipients were Zun-Yi Yu (尤尊毅) of the Department of Anthropology and Valagas Gadeljeman (胡哲豪) of the Graduate Institute of Building and Planning. Yu was applauded for his efforts in the regeneration of historic sites along with community development. Valagas Gadeljeman, a Paiwan student, was recognized for his dedication and service to his people.
The anniversary was also accompanied by a series of activities, including concerts, a film festival, seminars, exhibitions, and campus tours in the last November and December. For more information about the anniversary activities, visit: http://event.ntu.edu.tw/festival/?page_id=368.
