Happy Birthday! – NTU Celebrates 91st Anniversary with Joy and Festivities

NTU celebrated its 91st anniversary with a ceremony at the NTU Sports Center on November 5 and a series of festivities and events throughout the month. The ceremony was presided over by President Chung-Ming Kuan (管中閔) and attended by NTU’s former presidents, administrative executives, as well as alumni and guests at home and abroad. The ceremony was followed by a tea party, where the guests, alumni, and award-winners conversed, socialized, and built connections with one another.

The ceremony recognized the eight Distinguished Alumni of the year, Outstanding Youths, and the recipients of the 2019 Social Devotion Special Award, Outstanding Student Scholarship, and Fu Bell Scholarship. The scholars and social elites named the 2019 NTU Distinguished Alumni are as follows:

Academician Yuen-Ron Shen (沈元壤; electrical engineering)
Academician Ho-Kwang Mao (毛河光; geosciences)
Academician Michael M.C. Lai (賴明詔; medicine)

During the ceremony, Ho-Kwang Mao and Mau-Nan Chu were invited to address the audience, sharing their thoughts for receiving the award, advice for NTU students, and visions for society. Besides recognition at the ceremony, the Distinguished Alumni will also be invited to talk about their expertise developments and career pursuits in the NTU Lectures on the Intellectual and Spiritual Pilgrimage (我的學思歷程).

Among the various student awards presented this year were the Social Devotion Special Award, Outstanding Youths, Outstanding Student Scholarship, and Fu Bell Scholarship. This year, the Social Devotion Special Award went to the Social Service Division of the Student Association at the Department of Social Work (group), NTU World Volunteer Society (group), and Yu-Hsiang Yang (楊宇翔) of the Department of Geography (individual). The Fu Bell Scholarship was established this year to attract elite high school students to study at NTU.

During the anniversary celebration season, the campus is thriving with a variety of activities, including international exchange sessions, student activities, art and music performances, exhibitions, seminars, lectures, and alumni reunions.
